So What is Junk?

January 20th, 2013

The word junk can mean many things to many different people – garbage, useless items, trash. It can also conjure up a variety of images – old, broken items and things that have no value. But junk can be so much more.

The junk in your home might be old newspapers, mail, and magazines that seem to have a life of their own – cluttering up your counter tops and filling up your home. To others, junk might be boxes of things they’ve kept and stored away, but now they’re moving and don’t know how they possibly will dispose of everything.

Some people might even have junk taking over their professional lives. Their offices might be cluttered and filled with useless things that no one wants to sort through and throw away. All of this “junk” might seem unnecessary, and it should be easy to sort through and get rid of, but that’s not always the case.

At Jurassic Junk, we pride ourselves in helping people dispose of the junk in their lives. Whether it’s residential or commercial, moving in, moving out or just finally emptying out that garage, we can help.<!> De-junking your life is just a phone call or click away! Your Junk. Extinct.

Transforming from overwhelmed to organized

January 17th, 2012

Everyone has that drawer, cabinet or shelf that is the designated “junk drawer.”  This is where things get thrown and forgotten, and this drawer is usually in such a mess that it overwhelms you to think about – let alone actually clean and organize!  Well, not to fear because Jurassic Junk is here to help you go from overwhelmed to organized in just three steps!

1. The first and most important thing to do is empty out that junk drawer. When we say, “empty it out,” we mean empty it out – of everything. Clear it out and clean it out! You’ll be amazed by how much stuff can be crammed and stuffed into such a small space. Line everything you have out on your counter or on your table and then go through everything. Throw away the inevitable trash, garbage and junk mail that has accumulated and then go through the other pieces of paper, expired coupons, etc. that was stored in your drawer.

2. Organize, sort and put things in their proper place. If there are things in your drawer that you want to keep, but that don’t belong there – a makeup brush, a screwdriver, etc. – then put it back where it belongs. This should leave the things that are supposed to be in the drawer. It’s then time to organize these things into neat piles – a good suggestion is to organize things by category (rubber bands in one area, extra buttons, stamps, etc.).

3. Put everything back in your drawer. Consider purchasing an inexpensive organizing tray to keep those odds and ends in place, with each section dedicated to a specific category. Another suggestion that we found (and love!) is utilizing an old ice tray to organize those little things like paper clips and safety pins.

After that, voila you are done! The next time you pull out your drawer you will feel satisfied and amazed about how easy it is to find what you are looking for! Enjoy!

Keep It Simple – Festive Decorating Ideas

December 19th, 2011

So it’s the holiday season (in case you haven’t noticed), and decorating can be a challenge. With lights, ornaments, wrapping paper, Christmas cards, etc. – this time of year can be overwhelming, and it can be an organizational nightmare. But don’t worry, Jurassic Junk can help! We’ve research some ideas, and we want to help you organize and decorate your home in style for the holidays. Below are some tips to help!

Challenge: Too many ornaments – Solution: Consider a theme
Do you get caught up in the rows along rows of ornaments, snowmen, lights and stockings? Well, decorating can be a decision-making nightmare, so it’s a good idea to consider a theme. Ask yourself important questions, do you like bold statements? Or do you go towards soft and serene? Whether it’s sparkly snowflakes or homemade popcorn and cranberry decorations – it’s up to you, but remember, keep it simple and stick to your theme!

Challenge: Old versus new – Solution: Find the right balance
it can be hard letting go of old decorations because they have sentimental value. What makes it worse is that your house will become overcrowded and messy when you start buying more and more things with no place for them. So what should you do? Find the right balance between the old things you love and the new things you want. Take it slow, and go through your decorations one by one. Throw away those that are broken or that you no longer use. Another tip, it’s always a good idea to sort through your decorations before and after the holidays.

Challenge: No space – Solution: Make the most out of what you have
Space can be a challenge. Yes, that 6.5 foot tree might look magnificent, but if you don’t have room, then you don’t have room. Don’t overcrowd the limited space, instead decorate for your room. A lot of decorations come in a miniature sized versions. Get creative and decorate for the space you have!

Get Organized this Holiday Season

December 7th, 2011

The holiday season is here, which means decorations, cookies and of course shopping! What it also means is being overrun with to-do lists, holiday cards, and more wrapping paper than you’ll ever need. Well, as one of our gifts to you, Jurassic Junk wants to get you organized and prepared for the holidays!

Tip #1: Remember to organize your purse! Your purse can carry a lot of baggage – gift receipts, to-do lists, shopping lists, credit cards, etc. If you have a disorganized and messy purse, you’ll never find what you want, and you’re going to be frustrated. So save yourself the hassle! Clean out your purse before you go anywhere and just take the essentials with you. Then after you’ve returned, clean out your purse again. This way you can keep track of all your purchases and receipts too.

Tip #2: Organize your wrapping supplies. You might be one of those people who think you can never have enough tape, wrapping paper or ribbon. Well, in our opinion, there is no need to spend extra money on things you already have in your house! Keep a checklist of things you have, and throw away the scraps of tissue paper or torn gift bags that you can’t use. Once you have a clear idea of what you need, then go shopping to stock up on the things you need.

Tip #3: Don’t overlook the pantry. The holidays are a perfect time to go through your pantry. It’s easy for food to get pushed to the back and forgotten about, so take some time (we know, time is limited, but trust us, you’ll thank us later), and go through everything in your pantry. Throw away anything stale, moldy or expired. This way you will know what you need for your holiday parties, and exactly how much room you have to store the food.

De-Clutter Your Pantry with the Help of Jurassic Junk

November 7th, 2011

Do you want a snack, then you go to open your pantry and feel immediately overwhelmed? Did you just get back from the grocery store with a box of oatmeal just to find that you already have three unopened boxes? If this sounds like you and your pantry, then let Jurassic Junk help! We’ve compiled three easy steps to organize, de-clutter and keep you pantry manageable. Remember, it’s important to maintain this progress and keep up with the steps in order to keep your pantry clean and organized!

1. Toss it. This is usually the first step in a lot of our posts. The reason why is that in order to organize and de-clutter, it’s very important to toss and get rid of unnecessary things. For your pantry, it’s important to toss anything that is stale, expired, moldy, infested – well you get the idea. Once you get rid of all that clutter, you should be left with familiar items that you use on a weekly basis. If something is left over, and you’re thinking to yourself, “Why in the world did I buy that?” – well then toss that too!

2. Love your list. Lists are so important when it comes to grocery shopping. Without them, you will be left wandering the aisles and making impulse buys left and right. When you are making your grocery list, go through your pantry and make sure that you actually need those items. If you already seemed stocked up on something, there is no reason to buy more – it just causes clutter and takes up space. Remember, you don’t want to overcrowd because that leads to inefficiency and frustration.

3. Say no to the clutter foods. Clutter foods are things that you pick up but never use. It’s the “Oh, I really should get one more box of granola, even though I already have two boxes at home.” You might think that you can never have to much granola, oatmeal, mac and cheese, etc., but trust us you can! If you notice that you are stocking up on items, and then later you are throwing them away, without even being opened, then cross it off your list because you obviously don’t need it!

Moving? Jurassic Junk has you covered!

October 21st, 2011

Did you know, every year, one in five American families makes a move? While moving to a new place can be an exciting adventure, the moving process can be one of life’s most stressful events. Whether you are full of anticipation, feeling overwhelmed or just anxious to get the move over with, Jurassic Junk has complied a list of tips to make the moving day experience organized and a little easier!

1. Put paperwork in its place. Invest in a binder with pocket dividers. Place all important paperwork (i.e.: moving documents, transcripts, directions, etc.) in the binder and keep it somewhere safe. That way, when moving day comes you have all your pertinent paperwork in one place!

2. Toss the trash. Moving is a great time to seize the opportunity and throw away items that you no longer use or want. Be critical. If you haven’t used it in years, can’t fit into it, or it’s broken – then it would probably be better off in the trash rather than junking up your new home!

3. Pack properly. It’s twice as hard to find things after you move if nothing is label or packed properly. Create a floor plan of your home, and utilize this as a reference for when you unpack. For example if you label your kitchen “Room A” on your floor plan, then mark boxes with kitchen appliances, utensils, etc like “A – Silverware.”  Another good idea is to pack a box labeled “We’re Here.” This box should contain the items that you will need your first day and night in your new home, like: kids’ special toys, dog/cat food, paper plates for take out, etc.

Personalized Tips for Left and Right-Brainers!

October 6th, 2011

Organizing for Left-Brainers
Okay, so you took the quiz, you found out you’re a “left-brainer,” but what does it all really mean? Well, left-brainers crave designated locations for everything. Because you like to sort, keep things out of sight and prefer neatly stacked boxes, things with compartments, a set of drawers or nice stackable boxes would be optimal for you!

You might think that categorizing and organizing things by date, type of event, etc. is a bit extreme, but not for a left-brainer like you! Feed your urge for extreme order. It will leave you feel organized and satisfied!

Organizing for Right-Brainers
“Right-brainers,” so what if you can’t adhere to strict organizational rules? Forget about it! It’s just not your style, and that’s okay! You’re “keep it neat and clean” plan should revolve around your creative, emotional pull.

Some tips for you right-brainers – use containers, boxes, etc. that are lovely and creative. Also, it’s important to be aware of your clutter patterns. Are you the type of person so take off a necklace in the bathroom before bed, and then leave it laying on the sink for days? If so, maybe it’s time to place a hook near your sink where you can keep everything organized and de-cluttered.

Remember, if it works for you – well, that’s the most important!

Top 4 Tips to Organizing Your Desk

September 23rd, 2011

We talked a lot about organizing and de-cluttering your home. This week, we wanted to focus on your office and more importantly organizing your desk. Your desk is the place where you spend most of your time at work. An unorganized and cluttered desk can leave you feeling frustrated. So below are 4 quick tips on how to de-clutter and maintain an organized desk!

1. Get rid of the pens and pencils you don’t need. We all like to have a stash of pens and pencils (some that don’t even work anymore). Instead of letting them pile up all over your desk, throw away the ones that are broken, you don’t use or you just don’t need. Don’t feel bad, it’s just clutter!

2. Keep a notepad near your phone. During the day, I’m sure you get calls with telephone numbers, names of people you need to contact, email addresses, etc. If you have one notebook dedicated just for phone calls, all of that information will be in one organized place rather than scattered around your desk on scraps of paper.

3. Organize based on frequency of use. If you use something everyday it’s common sense to have it closer to you then something you use once a month. Instead of organizing your desk based on how it looks, organize it based on what you use. This cuts down on the time you spend searching for things you need around your desk on a daily basis. Now, they’ll just be right in front of your nose!

4. Spend a few minutes at the end of your day re-organizing and preparing for tomorrow. If you know the first thing you need to do the next day is to send a fax, then set it out on your desk so you’re ready to go. If you spend a few minutes at the end of each day organizing and preparing, you will start each morning off on the right foot!
