Top 4 Tips to Organizing Your Desk

September 23rd, 2011

We talked a lot about organizing and de-cluttering your home. This week, we wanted to focus on your office and more importantly organizing your desk. Your desk is the place where you spend most of your time at work. An unorganized and cluttered desk can leave you feeling frustrated. So below are 4 quick tips on how to de-clutter and maintain an organized desk!

1. Get rid of the pens and pencils you don’t need. We all like to have a stash of pens and pencils (some that don’t even work anymore). Instead of letting them pile up all over your desk, throw away the ones that are broken, you don’t use or you just don’t need. Don’t feel bad, it’s just clutter!

2. Keep a notepad near your phone. During the day, I’m sure you get calls with telephone numbers, names of people you need to contact, email addresses, etc. If you have one notebook dedicated just for phone calls, all of that information will be in one organized place rather than scattered around your desk on scraps of paper.

3. Organize based on frequency of use. If you use something everyday it’s common sense to have it closer to you then something you use once a month. Instead of organizing your desk based on how it looks, organize it based on what you use. This cuts down on the time you spend searching for things you need around your desk on a daily basis. Now, they’ll just be right in front of your nose!

4. Spend a few minutes at the end of your day re-organizing and preparing for tomorrow. If you know the first thing you need to do the next day is to send a fax, then set it out on your desk so you’re ready to go. If you spend a few minutes at the end of each day organizing and preparing, you will start each morning off on the right foot!

Organizing Your Closet

September 8th, 2011

When you think of your closet do you think of a neatly organized space of clothing, shoes and accessories, or do you think of a jam packed space that has hangers falling out and old clothes and shoes you haven’t seen, let alone worn, in years? Well if you fall into the latter category, no worries. Below are 3 great tips to organizing your closet.

1. Clear it out. This might be the hardest step, but remember it’s all about the nice, organized end product. You need to clear out your closet of everything (I mean everything), and then distinguish between the items (shoes included) that you wear and the items you can throw away. Now if you find that the items you plan on throwing away equals a sweater with a hole and a pair of shoes two sizes to small, then you’re probably not being completely honest with yourself. Use this rule: if you haven’t worn it within a year, toss it.

2. Simplify your space. Think of your day to day activities, what clothes you wear the most, and begin to organize your closet based on that. If you make it easier to find the clothes you want, you not only save yourself time, but you’re also not rummaging through trying to find that one pair of jeans, which means a neat closet everyday. Another trick is to keep the things you wear the most at eye level or below. Those things will be easy for you to reach on a daily basis, while other seasonal items, like swimsuits, can go up top (out of sight and out of mind until next summer).

3. Invest in your closet. Your closet will be more neat and look better if you invest in the right products, hardwired and materials. Uniform hangers and shoes racks will not only organize your space, it will help it look clean and appealing.
